1. The ant colony is divided into three:-
- Workers; 90-95% of ants in a colony are workers. The workers are all females. The females are all sterile. Their function is to find food, feed the queen, take care of the younger ants, protect the nest from unwanted visitors ( when they are young), store food and repair the nest. Whenever you see an ant, it'll be more likely to be a worker.
- Soldiers; They are the male, they have larger mandibles and their function is to protect the nest during attack or invasion, and carry heavy prey.
- Queen; Her only function is to rule the colony and produce eggs. When the queen dies, the ants can only live for few months.
2. They are many:-
There are 12,000 species of ants. And also there are 10 quadrillion ants on the planet.
3. They are very strong:-
They can carry a load 10-50 times their body weight. This is like 180 pound (around 82kg) human carrying a car or a hippo. Some can even carry more.
4. They are massive:-
If you're add up the mass of all ants, it would be equal to the mass of all humans on the planet.
5. Their lifespan:-
Worker ants can live for 7 years. The queen ants have the longest lifespan of all insects, they live for 30 years.
6. Their size:-
The size of an average ant ranges from 1.6mn-13mm. The largest ant is the "bullet ant", it's size can reach up to 1.6 inches.
7. How large is their nest:-
An average ant nest contain about 4,000-7,000 workers. The largest ant nest ever found reach about 6,000km from nothern Italy through south of France and to Atlantic coast of Spain. It belongs to the "Argentine ant".
8. They are enslavers:-
They kidnapp other ants from another colony and enslave them. Soldier ants also steal eggs of another colony and when they hatch they'll become slaves.
9. How do ants sleep?
Ants can take around 250 naps a day which will add up to 4 hours 48 minutes. Research also found that 80% of ants are working in a colony at any given time.
10. Jobless ants
20% of ants in a colony at any given time are absolutely doing nothing.
